Tacheles

September 11, 2019 Berlin

On the news that the former art space Tacheles is being turned into a photo museum, I looked up the history of the building, formerly named Friedrichstraßenpassage. As it’s often the case, these ruins have a fascinating story, and unbeknownst to me, the building used to be swanky department store before the war. Sadly, many such buildings either didn’t survive the war or the GDR regime’s propensity for tearing down history sites they didn’t have the money to build back up.
